Typically, the player who holds the most prestigious card in the hand is awarded the pot, but in some variations, the winning hand is split between the two players.
Unlike other card games, bluffing is an essential element of the game. Poker entices players to bet a larger amount, especially if their hand is good. Many players will bet more than the minimum in a given round in order to sway the other players. Alternatively, a player might bluff by calling the bet of his opponent, which is the most common tactic.
